What is the ADOS?

Early assessment of autism spectrum issues is critical.  The earlier the better.  A cornerstone of a good assessment should include the ADOS. The ADOS is the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule and is used to assess for autism spectrum disorders (ASD), such as autism and Asperger’s. It is considered the “gold standard” of autism spectrum assessment in children.
The ADOS…
·        provides a more complete view of a child’s social and communication strengths and vulnerabilities than other assessment tools.
·        can be used with toddlers through adults.
·        is used for early identification and diagnosis in very young children, which allows for earlier intervention and a better chance of improvement in social and communication skills.
·        is tailored to a child’s expressive language level, from nonverbal to fluent speech.
·        distinguishes between ASD and other communication or developmental disorders.
·        is FUN for kids!
·        creates a standardized approach to assessment for ASD.
·        was developed by some of the world’s leading experts on autism spectrum disorders.
·        is utilized by prominent researchers around the world for both diagnostic and research assessments for ASD.

SO!  When you are looking for a good assessment, be sure your psychologist offers the ADOS.  Early assessment + early intervention = Excellent Outcomes!
